Lynden Christian High School
Be The One Mentoring Program
November 2020
STORIES TO SHARE/ GENERAL UPDATE:
November was consistent for Be The One at Lynden Christian. Two pairs regularly met, one pair had a first meeting, but the student ultimately decided that focusing on school work needed to be a priority right now. I was actively engaged in conversation with students and mentors both those who are interested and those waiting to be matched. October was a bit busier with vetting all of the new mentors, but November brought a sense of calm and allowed me to connect and get to know people a bit better.
One of my mentors had to miss a weekly meeting, but she was sure to send a special note to be delivered by me to her mentee during their normal meeting time. It is encouraging to see just how much these mentors care about their students even in the short time they’ve been meeting
Mentees: We had two students express interest in having a mentor and are in the process of returning their permission slips. I have a mentor in mind for each student, so as soon as they get those permission slips in I hope to facilitate the scheduling of the first meeting.
Mentors: In November, LC had two new mentors turn in applications and RSVP for the December Orientation.
RECRUITING MENTORS + MENTEES:
- I am constantly seeking new mentor applicants or participants to attend orientation/ information sessions. Word of mouth seems to be the best mode of recruitment thus far, so I do my best to bring Be The One into conversations when I am out and about. I also appreciate the referrals for mentors and mentees.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENTS:
- On November 19, a Mentor Equipping session via zoom took place focusing on self-care for mentors. Two of our mentors attended and a few others committed to watching the recording.
UPCOMING PLANS:
- Our next Mentor Orientation/ Information Session is scheduled for Tuesday, December 1 from 1:30-3:30pm at LCHS- spread the word!
- As the holidays approach and the pandemic has seemingly amped up further I am constantly reminded to stay vigilant and flexible. I appreciate all the support from every level, and especially the Mentors who are willing to help students continue to thrive in uncertain times.
